A 25-year-old mother shared this photo to talk about her depression.

US-based Brittany Ernsperger, a 25-year-old young mother’s post on depression went viral after she wrote about the reality of what it feels like to be depressed. Ernsperger posted a photograph of clean dishes on her kitchen counter and captioned it “This is what depression looks like”.

Since posting it on Facebook, her post has been shared by over 2 lakh people because of how relatable it is. One comment reads, “This is one of the best descriptions I’ve heard for depression/anxiety and it really helps to end the stigma attached to mental health issues (and) to show it in a nice normal looking family kitchen… kudos to you for sharing your struggle!” Another reads, “This is the story of my life.”

Ernsperger’s candid message about living with depression resonated with thousands of people who shared her post and tagged friends. Many people called it “honest”.

Ernsperger writes below her photo,

“This is what depression looks like. No. Not the clean dishes. But that there were that many dishes in the first place; that I’ve gone 2 weeks without doing them. 3 days ago I sat on the kitchen floor and stared at them while I cried. I knew they needed to be done. I wanted to do them so bad.

But depression pulled me under. It sucked me in. Like a black hole. Rapidly, sinking quick-sand.

I walked by them morning and night and all day long. And just looked at them. Telling myself that I could do them. Telling myself that I would. And feeling defeated everyday that I didn’t. Making the depression only that much worse because not accomplishing something that needs to be done is failure.

She further adds, “Depression is something that “strong” people don’t talk about because they don’t want people to think they’re “weak”. You’re not weak. You’ve been strong for so long and through so many things, that your body needs a break.”

Facebook Joins Skill India Mission to Empower Youth

Social media giant Facebook on Tuesday entered into a strategic partnership with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to empower youth and entrepreneurs with digital skills in India.

The partnership, signed in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, will enable Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) to incorporate Facebook’s training on Digital Marketing Skills in its courses, besides providing trainees with access to local, domestic and international markets.

The programme includes courses on Digital Marketing, Online Safety and Financial Literacy in regional languages with Facebook imparting training to people nominated by the NSDC. This will up-skill job seekers and increase their prospects of employment.

“We are delighted to partner with the National Skill Development Corporation to help in upskilling the youth of the country and also empower local businesses by providing training and resources to build up a digital presence and grow their businesses beyond what the traditional offline economies offer,” Ankhi Das, Public Policy Director, India, South and Central Asia – Facebook, said in a statement.

“This skilled workforce and successful businesses are imperative for boosting employment and economic growth in the country,” she added.

The collaboration will also enable trainees to have access to Facebook’s Jobs tool to easily search for job openings. They can easily search for jobs in their Facebook app or visit through their mobile phones while controlling the sharing of information with prospective employers.

“The partnership with Facebook aims to leverage the digital opportunity which can assist in creating a market place for many businesses and service offerings for candidates getting trained under our skill ecosystem and; also act as an information kiosk for knowledge sharing,” said Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

“With Facebook’s expertise and support, we are taking a step towards utilising the immense potential of digital skills for the economic betterment of the country,” he said.

Under the Skill India Mission, nearly one crore youth in the country are being annually skilled, reskilled and upskilled through various central government programmes.

Facebook’s previous training programmes on Digital Marketing Skills have upskilled more than 200,000 youth and entrepreneurs under the #BoostYourBusiness programme across 16 states in the country.

Under the network giant’s #SheMeansBusiness programme, another 30,000 women entrepreneurs are currently being trained, the company said.

In 2017, Facebook launched Digital Training Hub which aims to train 500,000 youth and entrepreneurs by 2020.

World Emoji Day 2018, similar to each iteration since 2014, is on Tuesday, July 17. World Emoji Day was founded by Jeremy Burge, the creator of Emojipedia, which is an unofficial Wikipedia for emojis. Ever since instant messaging took over the reins of day-to-day communication, emojis or emoticons have been frequently used by people to express their feelings in a way that is comprehensible to the recipient. On the occasion, Facebook and Twitter have released statistics and infographics that reveal the volume and preferences of emojis across the world, including India. Facebook has also released two new features. Separately, Apple has released 70 new emojis in celebration of World Emoji Day, and also updated the bio photos of its leadership team with Memoji. Dating app Tinder has also released infographics for World Emoji Day, including one for India.


Facebook has introduced two new features including a camera frame and a themed text element to help users express themselves better with emoji. As per statistics revealed by Facebook, users on the social networking platform frequented the <3 heart emoji twice as much as this year compared to last year. With a total of 2,800 emojis available in Facebook’s catalogue, almost 2,300 are used every day on the platform. And, there are over 900 million instances of emoji responses, without text, on Facebook Messenger daily. More than 700 million are used on Facebook posts each day, with the biggest day being New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2017) that saw the highest amount of emojis shared on both platforms.

In India, the most popular emoji on Facebook and Facebook Messenger was the Cake emoji, which is probably used by millions of Indian Facebook users to send birthday wishes to people in their friend lists. Facebook users from the US and UK used the ‘crying while laughing’ emoji the most, also known as ‘joy’.


Even Twitter came out with its top emoji list for the period of July 2017 – June 2018. The most popular emoji on the micro-blogging platform in India is the ‘crying while laughing’ emoji. Other popular ones include the pray emoji, the smile emoji, heart emoji, fire emoji, thumbs up emoji, kiss emoji, and more. Twitter claims that it has actively introduced new thematic emojis across relevant events of culture, entertainment, sports, and news.


Apple has something in store for emoji-loving millennials. The Cupertino giant has announced 70 new emoji characters that will arrive on the Apple Watch, iPad, iPhone, and Mac later this year as part of a free software update. Created based on the latest Unicode 11.0, the new list of emojis includes characters based on animals such as a kangaroo, peacock, parrot, and lobster. Apple is also adding new food emojis for mango, lettuce, cupcake, moon cake, and other popular items. A new superhero emoji, and emojis for a softball, a nazar amulet, and an infinity symbol will also make it to Apple’s range of devices.

Apple is not stopping there. On the occasion of World Emoji Day 2018, the company has releasedcustom emojis – Memoji, or personalised Animoji – based on avatars of its top management. These include emojis for CEO Tim Cook, Chief Design Officer Jony Ive, SVP – Software Engineering Craig Federighi, and others.


Dating app Tinder has also released its infographics for World Emoji Day 2018. The most used emoji characters in profile bios in India include the ‘laughing’ emoji, the cup of coffee emoji, car emoji, dog emoji, pizza emoji, camera emoji, and more. According to Tinder, Indian users on the app make use of emojis to describe their personalities, interests, and allegiance to things like coffee and pets.

Facebook Says Will Not Remove Fake News, Will Demote It Instead

Facebook has said that it will not remove fake news from its platform because it does not violate its community standards. Instead, it says posts that it deems to be fake news will be “demoted” in the news feed.

The social network is currently running an advertising campaign in Britain that declares “fake news is not our friend”. But it said publishers often had “very different points of view” and removing fabricated posts would be “contrary to the basic principles of free speech”, the BBC reported on Friday.

Facebook has been scrutinised for its role in spreading fake news after evidence emerged that Russia tried to influence US voters using the social network.

The company on Wednesday held an event in New York where it sought to convince journalists it was tackling the problem.

“We created Facebook to be a place where different people can have a voice,” John Hegeman from Facebook said while responding to CNN. “We allow people to post it as a form of expression, but we’re not going to show it at the top of News Feed.”

The site had done a trial displaying a red warning icon next to articles that fact checkers had identified as false, but later said it found this approach had “entrenched deeply held beliefs”.

Samsung galaxy tab has been leaking off the entire time. The new tablet appeared with thin bezels and no home button on the front, raising the question what type of biometric security it would have.

Rumors have been suggesting iris scanner and face recognition features, and finally, SamMobile reported that the Galaxy Tab S4 would indeed sport them both. The information was leaked from a firmware video that shows how both features work.

The animation that explains how the iris scanner and face recognition act when powering the device is the same as in the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones. Both features work simultaneously, and when the sensor recognizes either the face or the irides, it unlocks. This allows the scanners to operate both in light and dark environments.


The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 is nearing its launch. It is likely to make an appearance on August 9 at the Galaxy Note9 unveiling and most likely will be announced at IFA in Berlin. We expect the device to arrive with Exynos 9810 chipset, Android 8.1 with Samsung Experience UI on top. Suzuki Motor Corporation has unveiled the all-new version of the Jimny on the Japanese market. The SUV is extremely popular around the world and is expected to replace the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy in India. Suzuki Motor Corporation has released a new Television Commercial (TVC) in English that shows the journey of a photographer.

The earlier released TVC showed the Suzuki Jimny Sierra, which is a more rugged version of the Jimny. In the new TVC video, the regular version has been shown. The TVC talks about a photographer’s hardship and how far they have to travel to get a perfect shot. It shows a photographer driving around in the all-new Jimny and talking about his photography escapades. The promotional film shows the Jimny reaching extremely tough terrains with ease.

In the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM), the Jimny is priced at 14,58,000-19,06,200 JPY (approx Rs. 9.08 lakh to Rs. 11.87 lakh) while the Jimny Sierra costs 17,60,400-20,62,800 JPY (approx Rs. 10.94 lakh to Rs. 12.82 lakh). The all-new Jimny is expected to be heavily modified before the Indian launch to make it more cost-effective. The all-new Jimny is powered by a 0.66-litre, three-cylinder engine that produces a maximum power of 64 PS and a peak torque of 96 Nm.

The Jimny Sierra gets a more powerful 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine that churns out a maximum of 101 PS and a peak torque of 130 Nm. The all-new engine will debut on the Indian market soon with the facelifted Ciaz and the all-new Ertiga. In the JDM, both the engines are offered with a manual 5-speed transmission and a 4-speed automatic transmission. It also gets a four-wheel drive system.

The all-new Jimny is built on the HEARTECT platform, which also underpins a lot of cars in India like the all-new Swift, Dzire and the Baleno. The new boxy, straight-lined design of the Jimny gives it a very G-Wagen-inspired look. It gets a pair of round headlamps at the front with LEDs (Daytime Running Lamps). To boost global rankings, IITs woo foreign students, faculty

New Delhi: As the most sought-after institute in the country, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) never felt the need to reach out to aspiring students or faculty. It has always been the other way round. That’s set to change.

In their effort to improve their rankings in global league tables, IITs are now seeking to stamp their mark on the global stage through dinner meetings, special lectures, institutional tie-ups, advertisements in foreign journals and increased visibility on social media, primarily to woo international students and teachers.

“We have to change the perception that IITs are not just Indian schools,” said V. Ramgopal Rao, director of IIT Delhi. “Generally, the perception is we are Indian schools looking for only Indians in students and teachers…that will change gradually as we put in place a concerted effort,” added M. Balakrishnan, deputy director, IIT Delhi.

Not only for students and teachers, even for research scholars and endowment, IITs have to make an effort individually, as well as collectively, said S.K. Das, director, IIT Ropar.

The premier institutes believe that if they want to climb the global league tables, they have to open up their campuses for all. Even the human resource development (HRD) ministry is in favour of IITs reaching out to overseas students.

“In the next IIT council meeting, we will take up the issue and may suggest them on how they can explore the idea,” said a ministry official, requesting anonymity. In fact, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar had told Parliament that to overcome teacher shortage, IITs need to collectively bargain for faculties from foreign universities and institutions. Several IITs are facing a faculty crunch of over 25%, and the poor teacher-student ratio is not only affecting their expansion, but also their rankings.

Das said IIT delegations had recently visited some countries to promote the institutions, and more visits are in the pipeline. Balakrishnan said he was also looking to host dinner meets at top global universities, attend seminars and conferences to spread the message. There is a good possibility of IITs tying up with top colleges and universities in Asia for student mobility. “A lot of Asian students go abroad for postgraduate and doctorate education… if we can convince some of them to come to the IITs then it is good for both. They will stay in an Asian setting, without comprising on the quality of education and research, and we will become international in our look and feel. You will see special fellowships for foreign students as well.” He added that structured collaborations with top institutions across Asia, including in Iran, Nepal and Sri Lanka, are a possibility.

Kalpesh Banker, managing partner, Edushine Advisory, an education consultancy, said IITs have started showing interest in foreign faculties and students. “A collective bargaining for students and faculties will be beneficial. Brand IIT will be a bigger force than an individual IIT, that too, when a large chunk of them are new.”

However, a senior administrator at an older IIT said that though collective effort for changing the perception or recruiting students is good, in case of hiring teachers it may be difficult. “IITs are competitors on faculty recruitment, and going together may be difficult. Instead of going together for faculty recruitment, it will be better to go for collective departmental hiring than collective institutional hiring (all departments together),” he said requesting anonymity.


Rahul Gandhi seeks enquiry into alleged NEET data leak, CBSE denies any breach

New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi has written to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) demanding an enquiry into alleged data leak of medical college aspirants and installation of a mechanism to prevent the same. The CBSE denied any breach of data.

“Congress President @RahulGandhi writes to the Chairperson CBSE to order an enquiry into the data breach and to put in place effective safeguards to prevent future breaches,” the Congress party tweeted Tuesday.

This follows reports by some news websites that personal details of thousands of students who appeared for the national eligibility cum entrance test (NEET) were available for commercial transactions. NEET is a central entrance exam to select students for medical colleges.

Meanwhile, the CBSE Tuesday denied that there is any breach of data.

In a statement, the school board said the entire data of more than 1.32 million candidates of NEET 2018 was “maintained only in encrypted format with strict security measures with National Informatics Centre. So much so that, even in the print out of the confirmation page downloaded by the candidates, the vital details such as identification documents, mobile and email id are in the encrypted format”.

“There is no question of any breach of data or any misuse of data by CBSE,” the board said.

In the letter tweeted by Congress, Gandhi said he is “shocked by this wide scale theft of personal data that has compromised the privacy of candidates across the country. This highlights the serious lack of safeguards to prevent data breach, and calls into question the ability of the CBSE to ensure the sanctity of the examination process.”

“I strongly urge you to order an enquiry against the shocking lapse, and take action against the officials responsible for the same. In addition, I request you to put in additional safeguards to prevent the recurrence of such breaches,” Gandhi wrote.

As several high profile entrance exams have either gone or are going online, there is increasing apprehension about data security of students.

Data leaks have made it to national debates. From Aadhaar data leak to personal and financial data leak through a website of employees provident fund organization have attracted criticism from all quarters. The constitutionality of Aadhaar itself been challenged in the Supreme Court.


After 57 years of technology focus, IIT-Delhi set for a makeover

New Delhi: After nearly six decades of technology focus, the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi (IIT-D) is set for a makeover – it will become a comprehensive multidisciplinary university.

Medical science, bio medical studies, public policy, design thinking, sustainability studies, executive education and non-degree program will soon find a place at IIT Delhi as it shifts its focus to become more inclusive in its approach.

The IIT announced its bigger plans Monday, days after it was awarded the institute of eminence (IoE) tag by the central government, and said that apart from a multi-disciplinary approach in education and research, it would be market-driven like IIMs to raise funds to fulfil its bigger makeover.

“We will branch out and do more of what we have not done yet. The financial plan is ready — we shall raise around Rs.1500 crore from our R&D work for achieving the target,” said V. Ramgopal Rao, director of IIT-Delhi.

By a conservative estimate, IIT-Delhi will be spending Rs 2500 crore including the Rs 1,000 crore IoE grant in enhancing its research facilities, physical infrastructure and outreach in the next five years, the IIT said.

Rao said from 2019, its new public policy school will admit students at masters and doctorate level, its design school will admit at undergraduate and postgraduate level. It is starting doctorate courses with All India Institute of Medical Science in number of areas.

Advance computational systems including artificial intelligence and block-chain, biological and health-care systems, energy and environment, smart and sustainable infrastructure and habitat will be its new focus for developing excellence, the director said. He said they are investing Rs. 200 crore for a bio-research park in IIT-Delhi’s upcoming satellite campus in Jhajjhar in Haryana, and AIIMS will be partner for that as well.

Other than degree programs, the IIT said it will have short term courses like diplomas to cater to the need of the industry at large and such courses will be market driven and charged at market rates. For example, one year diploma in AI will cost around Rs.10 lakhs, more than three times the fee an IIT charges for its flagship four-year B-Tech courses.

“Customised courses at post graduate and diploma level will have market rates and we know with industry hubs around Delhi NCR, the demands will be significant,” said Sanjeev Sanghi, dean alumni and international programs at IIT-D.

The institute said, since they will be able to raise a lot of money from their internal resources including research, they will offer fellowships to attract foreign students to the campus and may offer enough salary to eager foreign professors to join IIT Delhi.

The institute has told the human resource development ministry to be in the top 100 global universities up from 172 right now in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University rankings and in nine years they will be in top 50. Rao said, in 2017 despite their 172 position, they got zero marks in faculty-student ratio and international students. QS is an international ranking agency based in Britain. “We are making a structured effort to remove the shortcomings and you will see the difference gradually,” said M. Balakrishnan, deputy director IIT Delhi.

Balakrishnan said to enhance foreign students presence, they will focus on certain catchment countries and tie up with top universities for joint post-graduate and doctorate courses. “In next few months, you will see joint programs with top universities of Singapore, Taiwan, Australia etc. As part of this, you will see foreign students coming and staying here. At PhD level, we are looking at 1000 foreign scholars at IIT-D campus in next five years,” Rao added.
